DESTINATION: RIVIERA MAYA

In the heart of this destination is the fascinating town of Playa del Carmen.

The Riviera Maya consists of a stretch of 90 miles of beach on Mexico’s Caribe Coast and extends from Puerto Morelos in the north, just 20 miles south of Cancun International Airport, to Sian Ka’an Biosphere in the south. Formerly know as “The Corredor”, the Mexican government began the development and marketing of this region in the mid-1990’s. Highway 307, a modern and safe roadway, connects everything between these points.

There are currently over 30,000 hotel rooms in this region with the majority operating on the all-inclusive food and beverage plan. The hotels in this region are designed to have minimal visual impact on the landscape and are therefore limited in most cases to 3 stories in height, providing a nice contrast to the tower-style hotels located in Cancun.

There are hotels of all types in this destination from small spa-orientated properties with 30 rooms to deluxe convention facilities with over 2,000 rooms. Demand is so great for this destination, there are expected to be 100,000 total rooms available in the Riviera Maya in 10 years from now.

There is so much diversity in activities available that there is quite literally something for everyone, including world-class golf. Once a small fishing community and an entry point to the mainland from the island, Playa del Carmen now features an inviting ambiance for visitors with its famous 5th Avenue, a pedestrian walkway extending for 1 mile featuring shops of all types, cozy bars and varied restaurants. It is a great place to sit at a café or bar and watch the world go by!
